Intended on doing a leisurely ride today as plan on doing a century tomorrow and wanted to protect my legs. Plan was a steady ride around the Sullivinville loop. Timed my climb up New Odessa Hill as usual and turned a season best 8:29 aided by a steady tailwind. Got frisky on the run to the Junction and felt great pushing a big gear to a sub thirty minute time. Tried to keep the momentum up on the next climb up SR 13 out of the Junction now that my plan for a leisurely ride were abandoned. It wasn't a great climb but I wouldn't be embarrassed as I usually am by my climbing. Put it back in the big chain ring and hammered the downgrade to Horseheads with frequent sections in the low thirties. Rolled into Horseheads with an eighteen average and thought I would have to work in the next section of headwind just to maintain the average speed but legs stayed clean, and I continued to pick up speed until RBI curve when the legs started to get a bit shaky. Kept good speed through the curse and finished off the ride with a nineteen average. Still felt good and convinced myself to try a steep climb and see if I could keep the strong ride going. Headed up Pine St in Watkins and continued climbing to Irelandville. Felt comfortable though not very fast on the climb. Kept going on the long grade to Reading Center where I would reach the point where only down hills and tailwinds remained. Legs were toasted after all the climbing and had to spin my way home instead of the continued hammering I had envisioned as I ticked off the miles on the climb. Still turned out to be a strong ride which was oddly refreshing.
