Today's ride was a new starting location (ice rink in Chesterfield), thus using a fairly new trail that lead us to Centaur Rd. Then it was some familiar roads I haven't been on in 5 years. I frequented a ride out here on Sat mornings in '05 when training for my cross country ride. Today's version went up (as in up a steep hill) Wild Horse Creek Rd, where I needed to shift down into my granny gear - no problem. The problem was getting the chain to shift off of the granny gear after reaching the top - there was a problem with the cable house and it was flex instead of forcing the cable to shift the derailleur for the chain to be moved. We adjusted the limiting screw on the derailleur so the chain would stay on the middle chain ring – hopefully no more hills today like the one we just came up.
We were planning on going out to 6 Flags, via the back roads, which I’ve done a couple times several years ago, but we didn’t have good directions and missed a turn, so ended up in St Albans, and there were no convenient stores or restaurants open. Did I mention it was hot today?
Temps started in the mid 70’s, and I’m sure it was into the 90’s by now. We left St Albans up (a shorter, but not as steep climb) Hwy T, to Ossenfort (starting with a gnarly descent), which dumped us back on Wild Horse Creek – at the bottom of the hill we climbed earlier – following it back the way we came, to return to our cars. While riding the trail back to our cars, I was maxing out around 18 mph, because my chain being limited to the middle chain ring. When making the mechanical adjustment earlier in the ride, I thought I would be able use most of the 9 gears in my cassette (on my rear wheel), but once I got it down to the 6 one the chain would rub the front derailleur – normally I would shift the derailleur to avoid the rub, but that was not an option due to the mechanical issue – so 5th was the lowest I could take it, thus limiting me from taking full advantage of the tail wind we were experience for a portion of the trail.
