 A Memorable Memorial Day ride.
An annual event on Memorial Day for me the last seven years or so, has been The Great Pizza Ride. This ride starts/finishes in Millstadt, IL and is in the 50-60 mile range. Today’s ride was expected to be hot, with temps continuing into the 90’s, but lower than normal humidity (below 50%) and a steady breeze made for a very enjoyable ride.

Memorial Day is one of the few days a year I pull out my True Colors bicycle jersey. I bought this jersey 7 or 8 years ago, and it has the US flag across the front and back.

I rode most of the day with Jen Moffit, Mark Ott, and Ken Steinger, but also encountered some ‘old’ riding friends Doug and his neighbor Robin (who I rode with several times last year on the Thursday Night Ride. At the first rest stop, Robin received a phone call and found out she received a 3rd place and an Honorable Mention on a couple pictures she had submitted to Framations in St Charles. She was very excited and overjoyed to hear this great news, provided by Doug’s wife, Jan.

Later in the ride, leaving Smithton, IL, we came across a couple female riders that were reviewing the route map. One ended up going off route on her own, while the other inquired about joining our little group – she was more than welcome to ride along with us. Starting up the chit-chat was we rambled down the road, we found out our new found friend is Teri Griege who not only participated in and completed the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon, but was also one of the stories of inspiration during NBC’s airing of the event in December. Teri was more than willing to share that she was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer a couple years ago, and still going through maintenance treatments.
