 Race 4 Hope
Day started off with a series of annoyances leading up to the Race 4 Hope in Borodino, NY. The race has gone from a nicely run friendly race to an overproduced event. Registration was a pain having to negotiate a series of lines even though I was pre-registered. The organizer would not accept the standard release form that they had on thier website and the release forms had to be redone before going to the pre-registered line. This had to be done while trying to communicate over the live DJ and blaring pop music. Finally got my number and my free T-shirt which appeared to have grease stains on it. Got back to the truck to unload the bikes and my brother was commenting on the getting a pre-stained shirt as his also had similar soiling. Got in a nice warm up and had to assemble for a pre-race meeting fifteen minutes before the race. Having completed that we had to stand lined up for ten minutes in a light rain. Finally the low point of the day came when the promoter played the National Anthem. One of the BIG TEAM riders decided to yodel, talk and laugh loudly while the anthem was played. Not sure if this was a protest or one of the most uncouth spectacles I have ever experienced at a race. Not sure what people are becoming in the modern age but I certainly don't like it. Race finally got underway and everything went uphill from there. Course is twenty-four miles long with a fairly good two mile climb after twelve miles of rollers. Remainder of the course is screaming descent to the finish. Actually almost made it to the base of the climb this year but got dropped just before it when legs failed for a minute or so, Quickly recovered though and got in a good though small chase group. Had a decent climb although probably lost two minutes on the pack on that climb. Had a fun ride on the downhill as our small group began to pick up stragglers. Ended up in a group of five for the final sprint. Appeared to be only one other rider in my age group so I kept an eye on him in the sprint. Young rider got ahead of me and I let him go as to save my legs for the final hundred meters. Had enough left to keep the other old man from passing me and beat him by two feet. Not sure yet my overall position is yet but I finished second in my age group. Felt strong and fast today except for one small section. Cut at least five minutes off last year's time. Turned out to be a real fun day even with the pre-race unpleasantness.
