 Memorial Century
Rode a hundred miles today with two teammates. Had severe thunderstorms and heavy rains last night but it cleared up by the start time of 08:00. We had all three done the race 4 hope yesterday and had planned a non-hammer flat ride. Course starts with a mile and a half 7% grade up Odessa hill then is mostly a series of rollers for the next ninty-five miles. After a neutral climb the ride turned into a fast hard ride as we traded pulls with speeds in the upper twenties for the first hour. Pace was more reserved in the stretch from Candor to Owego where we stopped and took a break and watched a parade that had blocked the road.Pace picked back up from Owego to Chemung and got dropped a couple of times- once on a hill and once when I could no longer hold the twenty-seven mph pace even in the draft. Stopped at the Dandymart in Chemung and refilled the water bottles and had some Classic Coke. It was decided to go back over Jeruselum Hill rather than take the planned route down Maple Ave because of road construction and abysmal road surfaces. Wasn't to thrilled but went along and got dropped big time on the hill. Regrouped and rode at a relaxed pace through the warzone that is Elmira until we got out of Horseheads where the pace picked back up again with a tight paceline and speeds in the upper twenties and occasionally the low thirties. Turned into a hammer until someone cracks and unfortunately I was the one to crack a half mile from the finish. Average speed was 20.2 for the course but we took a warm down ride to Watkins to pick up the miles we had lost by going over the hill. Lost a little on the average speed but since this was one of the riders first century he wanted the full hundred. Extremely tired and got dropped a total of seven times but since it didn't kill me I suppose I should have gotten stronger. Guess I'll find out tomorrow on my hill day.
