 Round the Lake Take II
Decided to try the lake ride again today and hopefully have better results than last week's sufferfest. Conditions were similar today except for maybe a little more N wind. Plan last week was to spin the headwind to Geneva then catch the tailwind for a big chainring ride back. Ended up doing the forty miles of headwind okay but the tailwind was absent. Didn't have high hopes going out and kept my head down and tried to ignore the two plus hours of headwind. Got to Geneva much slower than last week but was pleasantly surprised when the tailwind was actually showed up today. Felt much better making the climb to Ovid in the low twenties rather than spinning it out at fifteen. Didn't have a very good climb up the final uphill into Ovid but was happy with the average speed and still having strength in my legs for the next twenty-five miles of downgrade. Stopped at the store to replenish my fluids and decided to try a sports drink from the fountain called either Psycho or Cyclone in my water bottles. Figured it was probably not much different from a fountain drink Coke other than perhaps more sugar and caffine. Got back on the bike and kept good speed most of the way back with speeds in the mid to upper twenties. Took one sip of the sports drink and found it most fowl. Decided to forego fluids for the rest of the ride but it wasn't a problem since I had topped off at the store. Felt good all the way back and average speed kept increasing until I got in traffic in Watkins. Ended up with a fair average especially considering the slow speeds on the way up. Legs felt strong after the ride rather than dead as they did last week and am looking forward to a stronger ITT tomorrow.
