 Three Climbs
Fairly decent day today with bright sunshine and a manageable wind. Decided to do some highway climb hills today that would gain some elevation but not have any grades over seven percent. Headed to Watkins and caught a tailwind but lost momentum as it's tourist season in Watkins with bumper to bumper traffic and a host of red lights. Tried to be aggressive as I hit the climb up SR 14N but ran out of gas early and ended up back in granny+1. Spun it as best I could but even with the tailwind could only maintain six or seven miles an hour. Got over the top eventually and expected the tailwind to help make up some time, but it turned out to be a crosswind that varied between helping and hindering me. Resigned myself to having another slow day and kept grinding away. Once I got to Glenora and hit the Lakemont Road I was less exposed to the wind and ride enjoyment improved. Hit the second climb up the Starkey-Dundee Road and was back in spin mode. Normally in the summer I wouldn't consider this to be a climb as it is a little less than two hundred feet of rise without much grade, but it certainly felt like a climb today. After that it was a quick downgrade to Dundee and then the final climb out of town on SR 14S. This turned out to be the best climb of the day as it is a rolling climb with three short steep sections. Crosswind seemed to help and was able to climb steadily. It wasn't a fast climb but one that I didn't suffer on. Caught a good tailwind for the final ascending rollers north of Reading Center and had good speed pretty much for the final ten miles. I was able to maintain mid twenties on the upper section and around forty for the descent down SR 14 back into Watkins. Noted that the average was in the mid-fourteens and was quite surprised. I had made up quite a bit of time on the descent. Kicked myself as thought if I had put more effort into the first section I might get my coveted fifteen average. Legs felt better after the ride than they had before as my quads were still tender at the start. Getting faster but got a long ways to go before I'll be back in shape.
