Split the ride today as had a time trial planned for the afternoon. Went to Logan on the morning loop. Fairly cold compared with what it has been recently and used the first climb up skyline for heat production. Did okay on the first half mile of out of the saddle but couldn't get much production out of the legs for the last half mile of milder stuff over the top. Kept a good spin on the second and final climb but average speed was way lower than normal. Thought I might make it up by catching the tailwind on the way back SR 414 as had had really good speed yesterday on the same section. Did the math and thought I might be able to get the average speedup to 17 but just couldn't get it done. Lost even more time going through the traffic in Watkins. Legs felt much better than last week at this time so felt confident would have a better time this afternoon.
Wind was going in the opposite direction from last week's killer South wind at the start of the ITT but it was still a large factor but more in my favor as I would have a tailwind pushing me up the climbing section and the downhill on the return to offset the expected headwind. Temperature was on the edge of hot or cold. It was hot in the sun but actually felt cold in the shade. Didn't have last week's minute man either as he wanted to save his legs for a tri this weekend. So my lead out man didn't have any aero stuff and hadn't been riding much so instead of giving him one minute we thought three we be better and give him a shot at making the turnaround before capture. Started off in too low a gear but soon had it up into a 53X12 and had good speed before the first small climb. Goal for the day was to try not to let the speed drop below twenty and crack the 25 mph average barrier. Kept it above twenty on the first climb and accelerated to speed quickly over the top. Ran well to the second climb between mile two and three and kept above twenty on it. Flew by my minute man soon after and had a good ride going. Ran into trouble on the third and last climb on the way up as tried to force the legs to keep the speed up. Didn't have enough and cadence and speed both plummeted. Dropped to 18 mph and had trouble getting the speed back with heavy legs. Took another mile to get the oxygen levels back up, had a good turnaround and found myself in good shape for breaking 25. First four miles of the backside went well as I was occasionally getting above thirty even with the headwind. Ran out of gas though when I got to the curse at mile nine and hit what felt like a solid wall of wind over the bridge. Speed dropped to seventeen and legs went into the rubber zone. Limped to the finish in 24:39 which was 45 seconds better than last week. Made big improvements over last week with eight strong miles as opposed to the mile and a half of strong ridiing last Thursday.
