 PA ride
Weather at home today was steady rain, high winds and fifty degree temperatures. Checked out the weather in Lewisburg, PA and it appeared that there would be a couple of hours of sun in the morning, moderate wind and temps in the sixties. Loaded the truck and headed south. Figured I would ride a couple hours then head over to Knoebels in the afternoon and check out some bands. It is a little over two hour drive to Lewisburg. Started out at the Buffalo Valley trailhead in town, but after looking up the trail and seeing numerous walkers decided to go out on the highway instead. Route 45 is a fairly busy highway and though it has a decent shoulder for riding on it is bisected by some aggressive rumble cuts. There was room enough for me to ride but probably be difficult for group riding. Although the sun was out as predicted there was some bonus wind added in. Ended up pushing a fourteen mile an hour headwind uphill to Hartleton. The highway going west really doesn't have any hills just ascending rolling grades. Couldn't really generate much speed and was only able to maintain the low teens. Got passed by a Mennonite sport buggy on one of the grades and try as I might I couldn't keep up, and it was quickly out of sight. A sad day indeed. Kept grinding away and after fifteen miles made it to Hartleton where I turned south and dropped down to the Penn River. The side roads here were very smooth and provided some enjoyable riding through the Mennonite farmland. Turned north at the river and headed back to the start. Aided by the now friendly tailwind was able to get some good speed as I worked my way back up the the highway. Would have preferred to stay on backroads more but none seemed to be going the direction I wanted to go. Route 45 passed through a couple of towns on the way back that are heavily trafficked without much shoulder but cars seemed to be very accommodating and would follow rather than pass. It probably helped though that the speed limit was twenty-five and I was travelling at around twenty with the wind. It started to shower when I was five miles out but it really wasn't unpleasant as it wasn't a soaking rain. There is one short steep climb on the way back that slowed me down a bit but once that was over the final miles were in the mid to upper twenties. Turned out to be a pretty good ride despite the wind and much preferred to sitting at home watching it rain. Park excursion didn't go well as the clouds opened up soon after I got there so had a quick meal and headed home.
