 Addison Racefest
First race of the year for me was at Addison. Had done the race off and on since the mid-eighties and I believe this was the 27th year of the race. Temperature at the start was in the upper fifties and although the wind made it feel a bit brisk the sun was strong enough to keep the body warm enough for a short sleeve jersey. Goal today was to just hang on as long as I could and if I was still with the pack at the end do a very long sprint. Had between thirty and forty riders lined up with a couple of PA teams well represented. Big Ring Velo had several riders and Twisted Spokes had a couple of strong climbers in the race. Recognized quite a few faces from the Williamsport area. Lined up at the back of the pack for the start of the race. Race started quickly with a lone breakaway by 'Das Bruce' who went at the gun and stayed away winning by several minutes. No one really chased Bruce and I just had enough legs to hold on to the pack much less pursue. Pace was fast for two or three miles but then slowed down and I was able to work my way to the front for the first climb. Hung in easily and got my first shock of the day as the riders called out right turn and I discovered this was the hilly version of the race rather then the fast flat course I had assumed it would be. Pack split up as we went through the climbs and it was whittled down to a dozen riders over the top with me being the number twelve down a few seconds after I could not respond to a Twisted Spoke riders attack on the last rise. Gap opened up as we went down the twelve mile rolling descent back into town and eventually I lost sight of the pack. Kept a good speed up on my own but was running at capacity and it wasn't enough. Got caught about three miles from the finish by a pack of four riders and joined in with thier paceline. Soon lost one of the four and it was down to four of us for the final sprint. I had absolutely nothing in the legs and just kept pedaling when the sprint started as I was unable to respond for the second time of the day. Two of the other riders didn't have much either as they did not contest the sprint and I rolled in second for the group and fourteenth overall. Was a beautiful day for the race and it was more of a club ride than a race but I was happy for that as I really don't have my race legs yet and was satisfied with a strong, fast workout.
