Numbers looked bad in the morning as very little recovery occurred overnight, but on the other side the weather looked decent. Had planned a long ride but body wanted a short day. Opted for a long slow ride at touring speed with goal to burn off some fat and explore some new roads. Temperature was predicted to be in the eighties with an increasing south wind as the day heated up. Choose a seventy-five-mile route that visited several parks in the county mostly on the York River. Changed the start location to Freedom Park where most of my rides in the area now start. Since the park was one of those on the list it didn't change the course much. Started out with stiff legs that took a few miles to loosen up. After a couple of highway miles the route went into a gated community. Rode passed the guard post acting like I belonged there. Really nice area with fantastic roads and beautiful houses and landscape. Spent most of the time hoping not to get busted by a gaggle of HOA Karens. Was quite relieved that I got through unchallenged. A couple more highway miles got me through Williamsburg and on a nice bike path that took me a crossing of I-64 and back onto secondary low traffic roads for the rest of the ride. The route was a fifty-five-mile loop with five out and back legs to the various parks. The legs to the York River parks were two mile rolling descents to the water and then climb back out. Climbs averaged three or four percent with an occasional ten percent short step. After the River Parks started to head toward Holly Fork and continued on several of the roads I rode yesterday. I did take one short cut to hopefully avoid construction along the interstate that turned out to be a two-mile-long closed dirt road. The road wasn't in very good shape but was mostly passable. Was a bit concerned about mutant cannibal clans that usually inhabit these types of shortcuts, but I only encountered some turkeys and a work truck that I assumed was taking a long unscheduled break from one of the construction crews. I did lose quite a bit off my average speed by walking up a climb on loose sand, but I was concerned if I fell and was injured it might take a while to be discovered or crawl out. Survived the ordeal and then got to do the abandoned bridge crossing to Holly Fork. Was pleased that there were no blood sucking insects today. Most likely the fourteen mile an hour wind was dispersing them. Course continued through Holly Fork and returned on many of the roads I rode on yesterday with occasional pleasant variations. Developed a tick that annoyed me and was unable to identify where it was coming from. Hopefully it's not the bottom bracket. Constant warm hard wind sucked the moisture out of me and ran out of water with a dozen miles to go. Went into survival mode and lost quite a bit more off the average speed but still had a decent average for a touring day with sore legs. Climb out of Cranston Mill Pond gully was most unpleasant even using the small chainring. Got the miles in and still had a good time but am afraid I will be visited by the cramp fairy during the night.
