 Potholes and Wind
Another cool day for riding. Made an attempt at Sullivinville again figuring I'd catch the brisk wind up the climbs and try pushing the hills and spinning out the last fifteen mile down grade killer wind section. Started out of the saddle again on the first climb with hope of standing for the first third of the climb but couldn't handle it and sat down and spun prematurely. I did get back out of the saddle for a couple of short pulls as the hill progressed. Really didn't have a very good first time check point making it to the top in 9:38 which is not quite far enough below my you suck ten minute mark to feel very good about the climb. Still felt okay over the top and tried to push the big gear with the tailwind and make the junction by 30:00 but again fell short coming in at 31:45. Got an unpleasant surprise when I turned onto SR 13 and hit a wall of wind. I had planned on having a good tailwind for the climb and now was struggling with tired legs, wind and the climb. Wind did shift again halfway up the climb, but it really didn't seem to aid me and had a really poor second climb. Over the top of the climb I picked up a strong tailwind and pedaled the next six or seven miles close to thirty miles an hour. It wasn't as fun as it could be as the shoulder is still cratered and had to ride in the road which itself has hundreds of pot holes. Noticed that the cars too were dodging potholes along the center line as well as dodging me. Had a decent time when I rolled into Hanover Square and did the math and figured I could get a good time overall out of the ride by just staying above eighteen on the thirteen miles of final downgrade on SR 14. Fell far short though as hit a wall of wind and struggled to maintain a sixteen mile an hour pace. I was actually seeing spots which is very unusual for a downhill section. Lost time on the last section as well as got more numb fingers from the wind chill. Hard ride today. Actually turned out to be a pretty nice day once I got off the bike and out of the wind.
