Had to work most of the night to finish up the project and decided not to go to Atlanta as I would only be able to get ninety minutes sleep before getting up and driving to the event. Slept late instead and opted for the Chief Ladiga rails to trails bikeway. The trail starts north of Oxford at the small town of Weaver and runs to the Georgia state line where it continues to Atlanta as the Silver Comet Trail. Total milage for the trail is nearly one hundred miles with thirty-three of it in Alabama and the rest in Georgia. Really wasn't into the ride much since it was a backup ride to the metric but it turned out okay. Trail surface is excellent and although it is primarily flat there is enough variety to keep it interesting. First twenty miles passes through a few small towns where bike shops, food and beverages are available and also goes through a University campus in Jacksonville. A large percentage of this section is under a wooded canopy that is probably very welcome in the heat of the summer. After twenty miles the trail leaves Piedmont and climbs at a one percent grade through the Talledaga National Forest to the Georgia state line. This section is more scenic than the first twenty passing over several rivers and by mountain meadows. Encountered quite a few cyclists along the way with the majority being family outings using cruiser type bikes. Traffic though was light with only a few walkers seen near the villages. Didn't see any speed limit posted which I counted as a good thing. Have to say this is the second best bike trail I've ever ridden. Best trail still remains in Las Vegas with its switch back climbs and decents and spectacular desert views. Hard to compete with Hoover Dam and Lake Mead though. Will have to go back and do the Silver Comet section as I understand that has some railroad tunnels involved.
