Steve wanted to stop over and do a couple hours on the bike today. The temperature was in the eighties, and there was a steady nineteen mile and hour wind that had frequent gusts into the mid-thirties. Decided it was best to head for the hills and stay in the woods as much as possible. We started off with a steep climb after taking a ride up Mainstreet. We hit Cronk Rd that twists its way up the hill and passes over the bridge over the falls overlooking the village. It is pretty much a mile or so of sixteen percent grade. We passed a woman working in her yard near the top that found it hard to believe we rode up the hill. We then had to ride west into the west wind for a couple miles to Moreland where we hit the second steep climb of the day up Catlin Hill Road. I hadn't ridden it in several years but remember it as being a tad unpleasant in places. It's pretty much a two-mile long step climb with the first step at sixteen percent and the second and third steps fourteen and twelve percent. The false flats between the steps have a fairly significant grade. There isn't any place on it to recover, and it is grunt work to the top. Once we got over the hill, we rode down Murphey Hill Road that runs down the eastern slope of the ridge and gave us some shelter form the wind. Found that I was traveling rather quickly on the downgrade and thought that I usually climb this rather than descend it and that it isn't that steep. Checked out a flag in a yard and saw that it was being blown straight out and so I was catching an excellent tailwind. Once reaching the bottom we worked our way across the valley still enjoying a strong tailwind. We returned to Montour via the Middle Road where we again had some shelter from the wind as it is fairly wooded. Finished off with a fast descent down Fitzpatrick. I had good speed but was continuously buffeted by the wind and it kept pushing me sideways on the road. The wind caused the spokes in my wheels to sing on a couple of the corners. Overall, it wasn't a bad ride, but the average speed was quite low for the work we did. Legs were getting quite heavy near the end of the ride as this was my second day of fairly strenuous climbing.
