When I left the house to head to work this morning, my mindset was one of today being my Friday, in this already short week thanks to Memorial Day on Monday. I scheduled to be off work on Thurs & Fri so I can join a team of people from my church to head down to Joplin, MO to provide some cleanup assistance. As I rolled out on my bike, I anticipated counting this work week as a perfect commute week – a week where every commute to/from work was done via the bicycle. As much as I ride my bike to/from work, I have recorded only 3 PCW, and during the spring & summer months tend to drive to work on Mon & Thurs with my road bike so I can go do specific rides.
On my ride this morning, after I cross Airport Rd (about 1.5 miles from the house) I realize I didn’t grab a water bottle, so I have nothing to drink until I get to work. Well, that’s not a big problem because my commute is not all that long, it isn’t all that hot out this morning, and if push comes to shove there’s a couple places I could stop & buy something relatively easily. After I get to work, I realize that I do have a bottle of Gatorade in my lunch, so I did have refreshment with me. Again, no big deal.
As I arrive at work, lockup my bike and start to head inside to start my day, I grab my cell phone out of my jersey pocket and push the speed dial #2 to call my wife, as I usually do, just to let her know I arrived without incident. However, speed dial #2 isn’t dialing. I didn’t look at the phone to do this, its simple enough to flip it open to push & hold 2 without looking, except I had a voicemail waiting for me and that alert screen was blocking my attempt to dial. So I check my voicemail, and it is one of the cleanup team members saying she had partially received an email about the Joplin trip and interpreted from what she received that it was cancelled and just wanted to confirm. Well, I’d have to check that and get back to her when I got into my desk.
I then call Jacque, and then proceed to shower, and as I go to get dress I realize that I forgot to include a shirt in with my clothes this morning! Ugh. I call Jacque back just to let her know my day has taken another step ‘downhill’ and she offers to go home, grab a shirt & bring it to me. I told her to hold that thought, and I would talk to someone from Inventory Control or Merchandising to see if we have a sample shirt or something I could have/borrow. In the meantime, I would just wear the jersey I wore on my ride in. It’s not like this hasn’t happened before. I’ll occasionally forget my belt, and once I think I forgot socks, but this is the second time I forgot a shirt. The previous time was about three years ago when Andrea was still in high school, and actually stayed home from school that day because she wasn’t feeling well. So I called her and had her bring me a shirt – wearing my long sleeve jersey in the mean time. Today, Merchandising came to the rescue, and the other key factor in that is demo shirts are usually ordered in size large, and I take a XL. Well, some of this larges were bigger than normal and I found one that fit just right! And I am now just 30 minutes into my work day.
I check my emails and return the call from Lori to confirm the email saying the trip is cancelled. The rest of the work day goes relatively smooth, even as I am responsible for monitoring the queue of helpdesk tickets for my team as our boss is out of the office today. At least one of my fears earlier in the day of doing something to shoot myself in the foot (more fearfully messing up something in production) didn’t come to fruition.
For the ride home I grab a bottle of Gatorade that’s been sitting on my desk for a couple weeks ago when I didn’t bother to open/drink it with my lunch. – I’d have something to drink on the way home, although I’d have to stop & open the bottle to do so as it wasn’t the typical bike bottle top. Again, no big deal.
I make it home to a relaxing evening, as Jacque is at the Cardinal’s game with a long time friend. She took Laurie in my place tonight because I was supposed to have a meeting in preparation for this weekend’s trip. Since the trip is cancelled the meeting was cancelled, so I have a nice relaxing evening at home. One thing I did this evening was post the stats for my ride home, and come to find out I didn’t reset the computer this morning after posting my ride to work. OK, so now I need to do a couple calculations to get tonight’s numbers, and then I realize that I didn’t post my ride this morning, like I normally do, so I am left with just posting both of today’s rides as one entry in my journal. Not big deal, the numbers would still add the same into my totals. Hopefully, the next two days, that I had been scheduled to be out of the office, are no more eventful as today has been!
