As I was making my way home from work, my mind was debating what route option to take: a) MDAS (most direct & safe) since it looks like I will be playing my first softball game of the season this evening (we have had bye's on the nights the league played, or holiday weekends, or it rained the days we were scheduled to play); b) take the Eva Rd option to get an extra mile or so in, but I don't like its surface; c) go out to Lindbergh to get a couple more extra miles - but how bad would traffic be this soon after rush hour? Plus, I'm planning on running the 5k tomorrow morning downtown at the St Louis Komen Race for the Cure.
Before I even get that far, right after climbing Brown Rd and negotiating the light at Lackland, a mini-van passes me as we approach the light at Midland. This happens frequently and it does rub me the wrong way, because the motorist has to hurry up and stop. Well, as I sit there off the right rear corner of the mini-van I hear the driver hollering something out the open passenger side window trying to get my attention. I don't show any response, then the driver waves a cane across the passenger seat and it protrudes out the window enough for me to see. So, I roll up along side to talk to the driver. He asks me about my jersey and me riding in the MS Bike fundraisers, and that he just participated in the MS walk a few weeks back. On top of that he has MS, thus the cane, and spends a day each week at the office of the Gateway Chapter of the NMSS - he is on his way home from there now. WOW - how cool. It was really nice to chat with Fred for those brief few moments before the light turned green and traffic was rolling again.
As I explained to Fred, and I've shared with others before, I know of some people with MS, but not anyone real close to me. In fact, I talked with a co-working earlier in the week who regularly supports me during the MS Bike because her daughter has MS. I had called Becky for a support ticket she submitted, and we were also able to chit-chat about Brewers (her MLB team), the Packers, and then asked me if I was doing the MS Bike ride again this year and she shared some things her daughter is experiencing.
When I did reach the point of my commute to decide which way to go, I decided for option C. I need the miles (every little bit helps), we should have enough players so its not like I'll need to be running around the outfield, and I'll just walk the 5k w/my wife, daughter, sister-in-law, and anyone else that shows up for our team from SPP.
