 Hamburg Road Race
Race today was put on by the Buffalo Cycling Club and the course was actually quite rural for only being located fifteen miles south of the city. Race starts were delayed for thirty minutes as a heavy shower passed over the area. Rode in the +50 Masters today with a fairly small field. Course was a little over 14 miles long with a gradual rolling climb for the first half and a long even gradual descent on the return side. The separation point for most riders including me was a short climb that neared a maximum 12% grade at the halfway point. Did okay on the first lap as nobody really pushed the pace until the top of the climb when Bruce R decided he would tenderize some legs and took off on the downhill. Peloton responded well and kept him within closing distance and recovered him on the beginning of the climbs on the second lap. I wimped out about halfway up the climbs and had to stretch my back and lost contact with the pack completely as they spun over the top of the final climb on the second lap. Bruce R went again on this lap and went on to win riding alone to the finish. I had a really strong downhill on the second lap and pushed the big gear well but not well enough to even catch a glimpse of the pack. Did catch one rider who fell from grace with the pack as well as some Cat 5 riders. Third and final lap was my weakest. Only caught on more rider from my group at the top of the third climb. He sat on my wheel for the remaining seven miles of downhill and never took a pull. Thought perhaps he was tired and would not bother to contest the final meaningless sprint, but as I was wrong as he sprinted by me as we were heading up to the line. I had enough to go back by him and salvaged something from the day. Really nice course and though I didn't have a very good race, I got a great ride out of the deal. Just hope my legs recover for the road race tomorrow in Whitney point.
