 Bees & Deer Flies
Got back on the bike after yesterday's dead leg ride and headed out for a longish ride with a couple of good climbs. Was surprised that the legs responded favorably on the first climb to Townsend .Didn't push the pace but climbed steadily and much, much better than yesterday. Biggest problem was swatting the deer flies that would plague me if my speed dropped below ten which happened frequently on the steeper parts. Reached the top of the climb and started several miles of decline through Monteray to Cooper Plains. The strong wind out of the south didn't bother me as much as I thought it would and kept a nice spin going. Down side was that the wind was full of insects and got two bee stings from bees being blown into me. Also swallowed a large bug and had a couple of nervous moments waiting for a reaction from a sting on my innards but it appears that whatever the bug was it went down quietly. Started having trouble with the wind after reaching Coopers Plains as the legs went dry. Didn't worry too much about it and was happy to have gotten thirty decent miles and one good climb in. Next climb was up Whiskey Creek and really suffered on it and had similar legs to yesterday. Slowed way down on the steep sections near the bottom and lacked leg speed on the milder climbs near the top. Was plagued again by a new batch of deer flies which fortunately were trying to bite my arms rather than my back and was able to kill an impressive number them. Think I downed enough to become an ace. Finally got over the top and had a thousand feet of elevation stored up to use over the next thirty miles. Couldn't capitalize on the descents and tailwinds and had to be satisfied with a touring pace. Limped back to Montour down SR14 and finished the day with tired legs and numerous bug bites and stings. Great weather though.
