 Lakefest Road Race
Drove in a heavy rain to Whitney Point for the Lakefest Road Race. The race is a low key open race that has been held off and on for the past twenty some years and comes in a 50 mile A race with significant climbs and a milder B race that has just one three to four mile rolling climb out of Marathon. Cars in the lot were sparse and we were concerned they might cancel or at least combine the races because of the light turn out. Rain let up before the start and less than ten riders signed up for the A race. Several name riders who traditionally race the A opted for the B race as to spend less time in the rain. I believe there were thirty four signed up for the B. I opted for the B not being a climber. After a two mile controlled start there is a ten mile section of flat before the climb and then another dozen miles of rollers back to the finish. Legs actually felt good on the flat portion and the pace was very high never dropping out of the high twenties range. Very few got dropped and we all turned into the climb where I immediately fell to the back of the pack. Lingered at the back for a bit then started to gain on the groups of riders tackling the hill. Pack had split into three distinct groups with a group of eight or nine in the front a second group of eight riders and a small group of four riders that I caught on to and creasted the hill with. Our group worked well together and we chased and caught the second group on the downhill section. Remainder of my race was spent with the now much larger second pack which wasn't really interested in catching the front group as two thirds of the group was just sitting in and not taking any pulls. I felt good and pulled as well as I could and came in in the middle of the sprint. Had a fun time and a strong ride except for my climbing which was as usual sub par. Hope the promoters weren't diuscouraged by the small turn out as this is one of the best races in the area.
