Third attempt of the year of circling Seneca Lake. Weather was less than ideal but hadn't really ridden for two days and the future didn't look promising with more rain and high winds in the forecast. Temperature was ideal but the wind was going to be in the low teens for the last couple hours of the ride and not the tailwind kind. Started out really well with a good tailwind assisted climb out of Watkins. Had a good tailwind all the way to Geneva and kept a fairly fast pace without going into debt as I would need to push quite a bit of wind up the climbs in the last forty miles of the ride. Was quite happy on the few miles of new pavement between Starkey and Himrod. So pulled into Geneva fairly fresh with the average over nineteen and felt good about the return leg. Positivity didn't last long as the wind tore me apart. Kept a good cadence but still struggled and seemed to be putting out a good effort with poor results. A few miles into the wind my rear tire started to clunk and I stopped and found I had a severely soft tire. Somewhere I had punctured. Normally I would either hear the leak, smell the sealant, or feel the sealant spray on my legs. I guess the wind had blown away the sealant and the wind in my ears suppressed my hearing. Used my hand pump to get a little more pressure in in the wheel but sealant was only good to a low pressure and had to be satisfied. Had the option of trying to put in my spare tube but if I pinched it I would be walking thirty plus miles. Opted to keep slogging along with a soft though still road worthy tire. Made it another six or seven miles when the tire got so soft the rim was clunking again and tried pumping it up again. Ran into the problem of the valve core unscrewing when I detached the hand pump and lost all my air and remaining sealant. After more frustrating attempts I got enough air in the tire to provide some protection for the rim and rode on. Got north of Burdett and decided to cut some miles off and the construction in Watkins by doing the Tug Hollow climb. Really wasn't much fun making the climb but seemed better than spending time stopped by construction. Made it home successfully but was totally spent between the forty miles of head wind and thirty five plus miles of riding with the flattish tire.
