I've Got Something to Say

The lyrics to the song "I Will Rise" really caught my attention back on February 12 as I was driving to Cape Girardeau to pick up my daughter and bring her home to attend my mother-in-law’s funeral. My wife had said something earlier that day about hearing a song on the radio that really touched her a day or two leading up to her mother’s passing. The lyrics talked about no more pain, etc., preparing her with a peace during her mother’s passing, but she did not know the name of the song, artist or anything much more that those few lyrics. So after hearing this song as I cruised down I-55, I called Jacque and asked her if this was the song. Well, it wasn’t, but it was a good one, too. The song she was referring to was There Will Be a Day by Jeremy Camp.
This song (I Will Rise) by Chris Tomlin played on the radio as Jacque & I were driving from our house to downtown St Louis this morning, so we could participate in the Greater St Louis Susan G Komen Race for a Cure. By the way, There Will Be a Day had played on the radio just a couple songs earlier. One of the reasons we participated in this event today is because of the passing of Jacque’s mother, Glenda, after her short 2-3 year fight with breast cancer, as well as my mother’s 7 year fight.
Jacque had mentioned to me a few weeks ago about her idea of participating this year (we had done it one other time, a few years ago when my mother happened to be in town that same weekend), and getting her sister (Pam) and sister-in-law (Pauline) to come up and join us in memory/honor of our mothers. Then we became aware of schedule conflicts. Pam planned a wedding reception for her son, Jason, and his new bride, Danielle, who were married in Las Vegas over Memorial Day weekend. This reception would be in Jason’s home town of Bell City, MO for family and friends to recognize and celebrate the wedding, who were not able to get out west for the ceremony itself, etc. Well with that on the calendar, that pretty much nixed the Susan G Komen plans. Then, to top it off, I realized that on June 13 I was scheduled to leave St Louis to go to Beloit, WI where I would start a week of bicycle riding – a trip I had planned and paid for several weeks ago. So, we wrote off the whole idea of doing the Race for a Cure for this year.
Then one day a couple weeks ago an interoffice email was sent out inviting all to join the SPP (Staples Promotional Products) St Louis team in the Race for the Cure. My initial response to the email was, "That would be nice, but it just isn’t going to workout this year." Then a few minutes later, one of our VP’s replied to the email imploring everyone to give serious consideration to participating. Ann explained her role on one of the committees, and as a survivor herself, she would appreciate any and all who would participate. I immediately forwarded that email to Jacque and asked if she thought we might be able to do this in the morning and still get away for our separate destinations in a timely manner later that day. We decided to go for it. Again, that’s why, and how, we ended up in the car this morning driving into downtown.
I did the 5k run, along with coworkers Brian, Fred, and Marsha. Jacque was going to the 1-mile or 5k walk, along with the others from the SPP team – Shelley, Lisa, Danielle (Brian’s wife), Nancy, and Gina – those are the one’s I saw and/or Jacque said were there. Upon Jacque completing the 1-mile walk, leaving the others to do the 5k, we headed home, cleaned up, grabbed some lunch, and each headed out on the road right at 12 noon. For the first 30-40 minutes of my drive, I could listen to Joy-FM, and during that time "I Will Rise" came over the airwaves again. As I got out of range of that station, I did a quick scan to find WIBI out of Springfield, IL (and several other places with the help of relay stations) and within a few minutes they were playing – you guessed it - "I Will Rise".
What a joyous way to remember the day.
There’s a peace I’ve come to know Though my heart and flesh may fail There’s an anchor for my soul I can say, "It is well"
Jesus has overcome, and the grave is overwhelmed The victory is won. He is risen from the dead.
There’s a day that’s drawing near, when this darkness breaks to light. and the shadows disappear and my faith shall be my eyes.
Jesus has overcome, and the grave is overwhelmed The victory is won. He is risen from the dead.
I will rise when He calls my name. No more sorrow, no more pain I will rise on eagle’s wings; Before my God fall on my knees And rise. I will rise.
