 10-mile ITT Third Attempt
Weather was nice enough this morning to get a short ride in before attempting the time trial in the afternoon. Had a good climb up Fitzpatrick without really trying and easily bested what I considered a good time last season. Didn't do much after the climb as it is a rolling downhill to Horseheads and then a tailwind assisted downgrade back home. Cleared some tree branches off the shoulder of the course so I wouldn't have to dodge them this afternoon.
Conditions for today's time trial were quite different from last week as instead of a strong north wind today it was blowing from the southwest. The temperature would also be a factor as saw temperatures near ninety as I warmed up. I think that it was at least twenty-five degrees hotter than last Thursday. I knew the time up would be much slower but thought I could get some good speed an the way back with the tailwind. Had a better start today as didn't struggle getting in the pedals but felt the twenty-two mile an hour starting speed wasn't very good. I remember hitting speeds in the upper twenties for the first half mile back in the day. Goal of keeping the speed above twenty on the two steps wasn't going to happen today as could barely hold nineteen over the first two miles. Good news was that I didn't lose much speed over the first step and felt pretty good about it. Got the speed back up into the twenties on the backside of the first step and was going to try to power up the second. Legs gave out before I could get over it and speed briefly dropped to sixteen. Struggled over the top and it took some time to recover but slowly got the speed back up to twenty before the turn around. Had a good turn around but poor time up at nineteen-point five MPH average. I was still confident that I could still improve on last weeks' time with a fast tailwind assisted run. Had a good run keeping the speed in the upper twenties for good chucks of the ride. Couldn't hold it over the last mile and ended up a few seconds slower than last week. I was of course disappointed but still pushed the legs until they broke and sucked hot air until my lungs burned on a couple of stretches. I felt a little better when I got home and checked the data and found that my watts had improved nearly ten percent over the last ride. Still I need to keep improving before competing in July and hope this is only a minor setback.
