 Killer Climbs
Wind started kicking up again so headed off into the hills to do some climbing. Intended to do the Breed Hollow ride but ran into some issues that sent me off course and checked out some new roads and climbs instead. Started out heading up Cemetery Hill and had a decent climb. Aided by a tailwind had a good run to the second climb up Catlin and went into it up a third from last time. Scooted up the early steep section much better than last time and held a good speed to the top where I crested at eleven and a half- up five from last time. Next climb was up Townley Hill road which went fairly well with the tailwind. Started having a little trouble with navigation as it appeared a few of the road signs had been rotated ninety degrees by either the winds or perhaps playful vandals. Ended up descending Townley Hill to SR 414 toward Corning rather than Breed Hollow to Big Flats. Had a few thousand feet of climbing in by this time and thought about just riding back to Watkins down the highway but a nasty headwind convinced me to head back into the hills. Planned on climbing back up to the top of Catlin via the Chambers road until I passed a sign for Backer Road. Remembered descending Backer with some teenage friends on one of our first bike trips some thirty odd years ago. It was dirt then with large rocks jutting out of it and was treacherous for us and our Sears Free Spirit ten-speeds. It looked paved now and started heading up a mild grade thinking this ain't so bad. Rounded and corner and saw what looked like a section going straight up. Imagine it was near twenty percent but didn't have much opportunity to look at my garmin what with dripping sweat and trying not to fall over at as my bike went below stall speed. Suffered mightily to get over the top and didn't climb it as much as survive it. Did eventually get over the top and headed back downhill on another side road that dumped me near the base of the Chambers Climb. Took another climbing side road that dumped me out near Moreland and figured that was a good enough day of climbing and headed down into Watkins then finished off the ride with a good tailwind home. Really, really tough and great day on the bike.
