 Farmland Ride
Today's suffer fest was the metric century at Flemington, NJ. Ridden the course a couple times and it is a pleasant and only mildly challenging ride. I unfortunately wasn't up to any challenge today as my body battery has remained flatlined and had another night of no recovery. Opted for the thirty-mile rolling course that I could hopefully complete to score my T-shirt. Weather was decent with a cool start and little wind. The longer courses had a mass start at eight while the shorted courses had a mass start at eight-thirty. I started early between the start times as well as a few others that were drifting out. Decided if I was going to suffer, I would prefer to do it alone. Started out at a comfortable pace and overtook a couple of riders on the approach to the first of the two climbs on the thirty-mile course. I was really dreading any climbing and started spinning up the climb and was passed by the other two guys. Hill wasn't terribly steep only averaging five percent. The two riders drifted apart on the climb, and I overtook the second about halfway up the hill. He hopped on my wheel, and I paced him up the climb, but he fell off as I caught the other rider at the top. Climbing effort was at least decent as kept the pace fairly strong only governed by the pre-cramp twitches that occasionally reminded me of my current sorry state. Thought I would be encountering them again but never saw them though my pace dropped significantly as the day progressed. Did some aggressive coasting on the decent between the climbs. Second climb was a bit tougher with a short eleven percent section at the bottom. Climbed at a relaxing pace once the steep section was done. Thought the tough part was over with the two big climbs out of the way but ran out of gas soon afterward. Passed a couple other riders a bit later and that was the end of seeing any other riders. It started to get quite warm during the last half of the ride and was struggling up the two percent grades. Turned out to be another day of watching the tenths tick off. Had a miserable second half after a not too bad first. Was well over sixteen average through the hills but lost big chunks as I struggled again to keep the speed above twelve. Totally empty by the finish and felt quite dehydrated at the end despite drinking heavily during the event.
