 Otisco Death Ride
Really had little desire to do this race as it starts out with a mile long climb with fifteen percent plus grade right off the starting line. It was cool and rain was predicted before the end of the race. Only went because had a couple of teammates racing though they were entered in different fields then me. Entered the Cat IV since I would only have to do one thirty mile lap. Lined up with about twenty others in my class and as expected got shelled off the back in the first quarter mile. Ran out of oxygen quickly and had no leg strength whatsoever. Thought about turning around and coasting back to the start but kept climbing foolishly instead. Got to the top and saw no one else in sight so figured I would be in for a long day as had two more killer climbs to go before the finish. Got up to a good speed in the rollers with a huge tailwind but had little expectation of catching anyone as I couldn't see them. After six or seven miles I did see a rider about a half mile ahead and pushed hard to catch him hoping to have someone to share the headwinds with on the way back. Made the turn onto RT 20 and started a small climb and saw a different rider than the one I was chasing ahead of me which really confused me. Busted a gut on the small climb and got close enough to catch the rider on a short downhill section. Turned out to be a Cornell rider who I drafted for a quarter mile or so until the Coon Hollow Climb. Stayed with him for a little while but guess he wasn't interested in working together and got out of the saddle and attacked. Lacked both the ability and desire to match his climbing and struggled up the climb losing more time on the seemingly endless slope. He got a decent gap on me but didn't get out of sight and I was able to reel him back in on a short power climb and passed him near the top and dropped him on the downhill back down to Otisco Lake. Tried hard to keep a good pace in the killer headwind for several miles along the lake as was trying not to finish in last place and figured I would need over a minute lead to beat the Cornell rider on the final mile long eighteen percent climb. Successfully got out of sight but made the turn out of headwind exhausted. Plan and body fell apart when I was caught on the approach to the climb by a dozen Cat Vs that started ten minutes down from me. Once they passed me they slowed up as they prepared for the final surge and I had to slow down and keep clear as not to interfere with their finish. Lost too much time and got passed by the Cornell rider about halfway up the steep climb. Got off and walked the steepest part of the climb in a light rain as really wasn't making much progress on the bike. Got back on and struggled to the finish a beaten, broken dog in last place. Not one of my better days on the bike and can't believe I paid money to do this to myself.
