Decided to get back on the road bike and do some climbing as have a metric century in PA this weekend and really need to get some miles on the legs and burn off some fat. As the ride approached the planned distance kept getting shorter. Really need to do a forty fiver but felt low and compromised with a thirty miler. Started climbing up Old Odessa and planned on doing the Mechlenburg route but couldn't get warm on the bike and didn't feel comfortable. Even though it was in the low sixties, I felt like it was much lower so figured my internal thermostat was on the fritz and climbed slowly hoping to warm up. Abandoned the plan and decided to keep on climbing in hopes of feeling better. Headed up Newtown Road. Hadn't been up it in several years as a good section of it isn't paved. It is paved now to the top of the climb, and it is quite a climb with a couple sections of fifteen percent grade. Descended slowly on the gravel to SR 79. Road is in fairly good shape even though not paved but not good enough to bomb down it with my carbon rims. Started to notice thousands of caterpillars crossing the roads and all of them heading south. It must have been going on for some time as there was a strip of pillar pulp visible on the road from cars running over them. This went on for a few miles. Descended to Bennettsburg then dropped down Skyline to home getting in one of my slowest rides on the road bike this year. Did enjoy the climb even though I took it slow. Kept it short and really need some warm weather.
