 LDA Classic Road Race
Race today was in Naples NY. Really great 36 mile course with the first 18 miles fairly flattish and the final 18 rolling with a couple of long climbs but nothing really steep. Body was still pretty lame from the beating it received yesterday in the hills of Otisco so the plan was to sit in for the flat section and concentrate on the major climb at the 18 mile mark which split the race up last year. Didn't work out as planned as I had a teammate in the race that went off the front near the start and it would be bad form for me not to go to the front and support him. First eleven miles went fast and hard as we exchanged attacks. As soon as he got caught I attacked and we seesawed back and forth three or four times making the pack work to catch us. Actually had a descent gap at one point but got stopped at a redlight that was supposed tohave a cop stopping traffic at the intersection to let us through. Unfortunately the cop was taking a donut break and there was a red light, so I pretty much stopped at the intersection and waited behind the pace car for the light to turn green. Pack caught up and blew through the intersection leaving me accelerating to catch back on. Did catch back on with a hard effort and rode in the pack until the climb where as usual I was shelled off the back. Chased unsuccessfully through 18 miles of hills but continued to lose time as I went. Did catch two or three riders who couldn't keep up with the main pack or the two man breakaway off the front. Rode most of the way solo but was caught easily on on the last long hill of the day by an 18 year old rider who had a flat earlier in the race. Had that familiar experience of having a rider going by me on hills like I was standing still. I was able to catch him on a flat section soon after as he had obviously been focusing on catching me and must have commited everything he had for that as I was able to catch then stay with him on a few of the remaining short climbs. Race ends up with a two mile downhill section and my new riding partner said he wanted to sprint at the finish. We rode side by side for awhile then with a mile to go he tucked in behind me. Although I am nearly three times his age I also had thirty pounds on him and on a downhill finish the weight is not that much of a hinderance. I put the bike in the big gear and took the speed up as high as I could go and dared him to go by. He either timed it wrong or his legs gave out as I nipped him at the line by less than a second for thirteenth place. Really fun race and it was followed by a barbeque and a live band. Can't wait to do it again next year.
