Decided to ride short and hard today after taking yesterday off the bike.Goal was to best a twenty mile an hour average speed which in the days of olde was a reasonable goal. Hit a snag with a lackluster climb right off the start up New Odessa Hill. Started off well and climbed steadily but not hard enough to get the time I needed and was already 30 seconds down from where I needed to be in the first two miles. Had a light headwind to the Junction and was counting on making up the time but again couldn't hold the speed I needed on the shallow climbing south of Odessa. Did fine on the downhill push to the Junction but was had lost another minute and things didn't look good for the home team. More lackluster climbing out of the Junction put me in a poor overall position at the top of the climb but still within reach of my goal. Did the math and found I would have to maintain an average of a little over twenty two for the next twenty miles to meet my goal. Headwind on the downhill wasn't helpful but still kept the speed up in the mid-twenties on the downgrade to Horseheads. Had held the speed I needed for ten of the twenty and thought things looked good on the final leg back down SR 14 with a good tailwind. Unfortunately the legs ran out of gas running up the grade through Pine Valley and crested the last hurtle with dead legs. Kept the pressure on the pedals and rode hard but couldn't get the average speed to climb anymore and peaked at 19.4 mph. Lost a little more speed cooling down through town but didn't matter as I had failed the test today. Still a fun ride and an incredible workout.
