I made it to Des Peres City Park for the start of the Thursday Night West County ride, for just the second time this year. As the 6 o'clock start time drew near, there was about 8 or 10 of us hanging around chatting about the route, and how hard we'd be riding, etc.
We took off, and upon reaching the intersection of Clayton Rd & Des Peres Rd, everyone went straight to do a 4+ mile bonus loop, and I hung a left to stay on the prescribed route. A few miles later I was making my way into Valley Park, descending a road that parallels Hwy 141 and has a 90 degree turn on the bottom, so I apply the brakes. Right as I start to sweep through the turn a hear a loud pop, and immediately recognize it as a broken spoke on the rear wheel. Well, darn! OK, so I stop and ‘open up the brakes’ which would allow the un-true wheel to roll through more freely and will just a little more cautious to finish the ride. Its been a few years, but I’ve dealt with broken spokes before.
Turns out that it isn’t going to be that easy, as the tire keeps binding on something before it can complete a full revolution. I think the tire is warped a little more than usual so I grab a multi-tool and release the brakes from the cable, thus allowing a wider spread for the tire – it doesn’t help. It is still rubbing on something but I can not see what or why? And I’m just past the halfway point of the ride – have another 12 miles to go, including a half mile long 6-8% climb up Marshall Rd.
So, I call Jacque to see if she has the phone number of some friends of ours that live fairly close – closer that having Jacque come & get me. We hang up so she can check her phone, and turns out she doesn’t have the number but calls someone that does, then calls me back. I call Pam, she says she’s available to help and we discuss where I’m at and where she can meet me. After I hang up with Pam, I roll on down the road and make my way to Marshall Rd, where Pam will be coming by to get to Valley Park. She arrives a few minutes later and takes me back to my truck. As I’m loading my bike into my truck I realize that the tire is rubbing the frame right behind where the brake is mounted.
If nothing else, that confirms that it was a wise move for me to call for a pick-up instead of trying to complete the ride on my own.
This wheel is actually a loaner from a bikeshop, as I wait for a replacement wheel I've ordered to come in. Don't know that I can get this wheel fixed, or that my new wheel will arrive, in time for ride plans this weekend. But, then again, 36 hours ago I wasn't planning on riding this weekend (or tonight).
