As I was riding today’s route I thought about the irony of today’s route being short (by PAC Tour standards but not the shortest of the week) and yet we are on the eve of the ‘longest day’ of the year (the Summer Solstice is tommorrow, June 21, at 1:16 P.M. EDT). On top of that, our route was not directly from Sheboygan to Manitowoc. Google Maps shows the quickest route to be 28.7 mostly via I-43 North, and an alternate route of 25.4 miles to take nearly an hour along Lakeshore Rd. Our route, on the other hand went west out of Sheboygan for about 20 miles, before turning north for 14 miles before running northeast into Manitowoc.
One of the cool things about today’s ride was just a couple miles after the first rest stop, as we were rolling through Greenbush Recreation area, there was a bicycle race in progress on the same road we were using to get to Greenbush. It wasn’t a ‘closed course’ so we were allowed to proceed, and the race was going in a counter-clockwise loop, so we were heading the opposite direction as them, so there wasn’t a problem with them trying to get around us slower riders but we did have be aware of the peloton coming toward us and stay to the right side of the road. The weather today was a little better than yesterday – no rain to really speak of. It was overcast most of the day, and the air got cooler (and the wind became more of a headwind) after the second rest stop as we were getting rolling closer to the lake. There was a little sprinkle at the lunch stop, but it was just enough to get the pavement wet, but everyone’s fear was we were pretty chilled already, so getting wet/damp could have been very chilling – most people, including myself, donned our rain jackets.
It was just a couple miles from lunch to Manitowoc (really), and the air temp seemed to improve and the overcast skies were lighter as we did our usual after ride ritual of cleaning bikes, etc.
