 Round the Lake III
Abundant warm sun and light west winds convinced me that riding around the lake today would be a good idea. Had good legs for ten of thirty miles yesterday and was hoping the legs would cooperate today else it would be a very long ride. Started out well as had a slight tailwind heading up the first climb out of Watkins. Didn't put in too much effort as wasn't sure what level my body could support but once I got near the top kicked things up a notch. Speeds continued to climb across the flats to Glenora and had visions of a strong ride if I could hold the pace. Turned off the highway at Glenora and took the scenic route. Lost the tailwind and average stopped climbing a little under eighteen and continued to slowly drop the rest of the ride. Although I was no longer flying along, the miles went by quickly and pleasantly. Finally made the right series of turns to hit the gully climb at Dresden rather than dropping into either Dresden proper or Penn Yan as had on the last two attempts. Choosing the correct course rewarded me with a steep little climb out of the gully back to 54. Didn't really have a very good climb out but as most recent climbing has been pretty weak was satisfied to get out without cracking and collapsing. Pace stayed steady in the crosswind to Geneva and made the turn in good spirits. Headed back up East Lake road and seemed much easier then last time. Headed back up the hill at the north end of Samson rather than try the park route again. Went the Willard route rather than climb back up to Ovid and had a decent climb up the big climb of the day. Not sure what sort of work they were doing on the road there but where usually it is rough but passable; today it looked like flat city as it just looked like they had plowed up the gravel surface. Headed up a side road to SR 414 for a short distance and think it didn't add much distance and only a few more feet of climbing. Legs held out well on the downhill and through the rollers back to Watkins and kept good speed though nothing like hammering the last twenty back in the glory days. Traffic was heavy back through Watkins and it really hurt the average speed but picked up a north wind for the last two miles to finish off the ride. Body performed well today though really never redlined it.
