I was once again the last one to leave the hotel parking lot this morning. I had a couple things to take care of since my computer case was still in the trailer and my cue sheets are in the case, plus I needed to make sure I air my rear tire up all the way before hitting the road. Then to top it off, a local leaving the nearby hardware store pulled up in his car and started a conversation about all the cycling going on around the area. He also mentioned that he used to be a utility lineman until his seventh back surgery in 2003 – he’s been retired/disabled since. I was finally on my way and I still had to travel the one mile to the other hotel which was the starting point for today’s ride. As I rode over the draw bridge that spans the bay, I was glad I took my bike’s picture on it yesterday, as you could not see the distant shorelines or bridge this morning due to the fog. When I did get to the other hotel there was no sign of any PAC Tour cyclist – so I am bringing up the rear but know that I should be able to catch those slower riders.
While passing through Little Sturgeon Bay, there was an old quarry are that has been turned into public beach area. As I was rolling by, I heard a loud CRACK and some chunks for rock fell from the quarry/bluff wall just beyond the other side of the parking lot – I didn’t see it but I did hear it. It was then time to make the first of today’s two short & steep climbs. Reaching the top, the cloud cover (aka fog) was thickening up once again, and it was about that point that I passed another cyclist from our group. I passed about four or 5 others, and was on the heels of 2 more upon reaching the first rest stop (mile #19). Like yesterday, I decided to put the arm warmers on at this time as the damp chilly air was starting to get to me.
A few miles down the road I made a turn and it seemed like the air temp was suddenly 5 degrees warmer. As I kept rolling along the clouds in the sky thinned out and soon gave way to some persistant sunshine. Around mile 30 we entered into Egg Harbor where some of the earlier cyclist had stopped for a coffee or ice cream cone at The Chocolate Chicken – I stopped for some ice cream, and removed my arm warmers as things were getting toasty (temp probably in the low 70’s).
By time I reached the second rest stop in Bailey’s Harbor (mile #44), the sky was overcast once again. While munching on snacks, and chatting for a while, the folks working the lunch van called and said the sun was shining at the lunch spot so they scratched the plans for spaghetti and went with a cold pasta salad instead. Most everyone bypassed the opportunity to visit the Cana Island Lighthouse – it was a 2 mile detour plus we would not be able to climb it in our cycling shoes w/cleats – so we made our wait straight through to lunch in Ellison Bay, right across the street from tonight’s hotels. And yes it was sunny there!
PS: no issues with my rear tire today!
