Lucked out for once as rain was not scheduled until afternoon. Temperature was warm at the start of the race but got quite toasty before it was over. Only thing working against being a great day was a wicked headwind blowing out of the south. Had three teammates this week lining up with another hundred and eighty riders for the thirty six mile race. First mile of the race was a controlled start and found a nice spot in the front third of the peloton as had no desire to get anywhere near the front in the heavy wind. First five miles was pretty unpleasant as speeds were uneven as we were going in the mid twenties one minute and in the mid teens a moment later. Had to ride the brakes and use them frequently as the group yo-yoed along. Was pretty sure the speed changes would cause a crash in the aft end of the pack but we made it to the first climb apparently without one. Stayed in the draft and didn't have too much problem getting through the first high speed climb. There was a small group off the front for awhile that included IronDoug but it was pulled in on the following long downhill by a tandem and its accompanying tandem sucks. Once the breakaway group was pulled back in the pack slowed down again and I had to ride the brakes on the downhill to keep the slow pace. Race started up again in Moravia where we turned out of the wind and headed into the climbing section. I was able to hang on the pack through the first hill prime but then couldn't maintain contact on the grade to the second big climb. Watched helplessly as Joe and Dave rode away from me and wasn't to see them again until after the finish. Had my low spot on the second climb and lost a few positions as I had no power when I came out of the saddle and couldn't stay with the riders going by. Got caught by a pack of riders at the top of the climb which worked out nice as my legs started feeling better on the downhill. I was able to work with my new group and we hauled in all the riders that had passed me on the second climb and perhaps a few others. Legs started finally feeling strong as we hit the rollers in the final five miles and another rider and I got away from the pack for the finish. I didn't contest the sprint and was happy to finish it off. Ended up only five seconds behind Dave though I didn't know he was ahead of me. Joe had a great ride finishing two minutes ahead of me in thirty-second position. Iron Doug was nearly seven minutes ahead and finished in eighth position. Finished forty-eighth overall which for me was decent as anything over fifty I considered a good ride. Felt stronger today and had fun on the ride which I couldn't really say about my last two races. Turned out there was only one crash during the ride as a female rider hit the pavement in Moravia.
