Showed up with 200+ other riders for the 36 mile Owasco Flyer in Auburn NY. Have raced here for several years and almost always have a good time. The race was fast again as usual with the tailwind up the west side of Owasco Lake with speeds hovering in the high twenties. Sat in until the first small climb when I went to the front and hung out there for awhile. Plan was to stay out in front as long as possible and avoid the bottleneck and crashfest that occasionally happens after Moravia when the second half of the ride goes into the hills above the east side of the lake. I was involved in a crash last year when the center of the peloton went down. I didn't go down but had to debike until the mess cleared out. Had a really strong ride for the first twenty miles but my legs gave out completely near the start of the first climb and I was again left pursueing the pack with a few other orphans. We caught a few riders and were also caught by riders from behind until we had a good sized pack of twelve or so at the finish. The finish was on a climb though and I finished dead last in the sprint and ended up 59th overall. Overall a really bad day performancewise but I did better than my crewmates who both flatted after hitting potholes. Mighty Young Joe went down with his flat two miles into the race and changed his tube and finished. IronDoug flatted in Moravia just before the climbs and was running tubulars. He got a ride back to the start on the sag wagon. Still really enjoy this race even though I'm not competitive.
