With a pure climbing race coming up on Sunday thought I would go back to the lighter carbon frame. Had two good climbs on tap for the day and a few smaller climbs and some mega rollers. It wasn't quite as humid today and there was only a slight wind. Legs were heavy on the first climb and mixed up Old Odessa between standing and spinning. went fairly well and finished over eleven. Didn't do much to the junction nor through the small rollers to CR 13 before starting the climb through Arnot Forest. Did the approach at a good clip but when I got out of the saddle on the first steep section started having a big clunk from the bottom bracket. I had recently replaced the bracket, cleats and even got new pedals in an effort to eliminate a small movement of my crank an steep climbs. Got off the bike and moved jiggled the crack and had massive movement on the right side. So figured the new bottom bracket failed within a few dozen miles. Felt really dejected and pretty much abandoned the ride mentally, though I still finished the course. Coasted the downhills and stayed in the saddle and a low gear for the remainder of the ride to minimize the slop in the crack. Fortunately the wind and heat weren't too bad today, or I would have probably had a death ride. Got the bike home and tore it down and found a ridge on the face of the crank journal. It must have been damaged last season when I finished a metric with a busted bottom bracket bearing. Don't know why the bracket I replaced last year lasted hundreds of miles and this recent one only dozens unless it was damaged by the ridge during installation. Found a used Shimano 7900 crank on the internet for a fairly decent price and ordered it. Only difference was the new one is 172.5 mm while the old one was 170. Hopefully my knees will be able to adjust after riding 170s for forty years
