 Genesee Valley Park Crit
Made a road trip to Rochester to ride in the Full Moon Vista Omnium. First race was a half mile long criterium in the Genesee Valley Park South of Rochester on the Erie Canal. Found a parking spot, registered, suited up and rode a couple of practice laps on the course. Had not done this one before and seldom do crits because I don't like crashing much and am not very fast. Talked to a rider who had done it last year and he said it was a crashfest. Course was only a fairly flat half mile long with two hairpin turns connecting the twisting straights. Registered to race in the 4/5 class and we were supposed to do 25 laps or about thirteen miles. Tragedy occured even before the first race started as a junior riding against the direction of the course, I assume to get to registration, ran headon into another junior who was taking a warm up lap. Both riders went down and didn't get back up and two ambulances were called. I could see one of the riders had a very bloody head wound. We were to find out later that one of the riders will probably lose an eye because of the accident. Witnesses said it wasn't a high speed collision but regardless it was a horrible result. The start of my race was delayed until the emergency vehicles could arrive and transport the casulties. Had earlier removed my water bottle cage thinking I really wouldn't have time to drink in such a short race. Promoter said that the race would be delayed an additional fifteen minutes over what we had already waited so I decided to return to the parking lot and get some more water. Was gone far less than fifteen minutes by the time I got back but when I returned the pack had lined up and the race was starting. Just caught up to the end of the pack as it took off. The race was also shortened to twenty-one laps due to time constraints. Never saw the front of the pack and just hung off the back and rode with the stragglers. There wasn't any more crashes and the race was actually quite fast and quite fun. Didn't really have the acceleration needed to be competitive but had a good ride chasing the big dogs.
