Legs felt good today and weather was great for riding. Instead of the wind blowing in the teen it was only a barely noticeable breeze today. Plan was to ride hard for an hour and then finish off the ride with some spinning. Start of the first climb was up Pine St in Watkins and was able to stay out of the saddle without much strain. Kept the flow up Stueben St and through Irelandville. Usually struggle in the north wind on the upgrade between Irelandville and Reading Center but while I can still claim it as riding into a headwind, I still kept a good speed. Usual goal is to average fifteen for the first hour on this route which is mostly climbing for ten miles. I was able to crest the climb before the hour ran out and was able to make my goal as high twenties and low thirties are within reach on the downhill section without a strong headwind. Wasn't able to make sixteen into Dundee that would be the next goal, but it was fairly close. Decided to push on up Chubb Hollow instead of going into spin cycle and felt good. Got some good speed bursts on sections going into Himrod and Lakemont. Speed started to slacken more than I liked on SR 414 before Gabriel's Junction but got to the top of the last downhill in the high seventeens. Thought I would try for an eighteen average that used to be common in the days of olde but seldom seen now-a-days. Got the speed up at the start of the downhill and while upshifting hit something hard. Thought that a flat at speeds in the thirties might not be pleasant and hoped it wouldn't happen. Unfortunately, my rear tire rapidly deflated and had a few yards of highly unstable travel before safely stopping. Swapped out the tube and headed hope at a much slower pace than planned. Still had a strong ride and changing a tire alongside the road on a warm sunny June day really isn't really that bad.
