 Durang? Park Circuit Race
Another early rise and long drive for an early race in Rochester. Course today was in a nice park on the shores of Lake Ontario. Ride started in the park at the top of the climb. Route had a twisting potholed 3/4 mile descent to the highway that runs along the lake which is a flattish 1/2 mile and a 3/4 mile gradual ascent back to the start. Nothing really steep in the course but there was a short kicker just before the finish. The course was fairly technical with cones and gates to herd riders around the cratered sections of narrow road. Had to do 11 laps in the 4/5 class or about 22 miles. Race was delayed for a few minutes as officials tried to decide if the course was safe enough to ride. They decided to let us try it out as we were the first race of the days and expendable since we were only 4/5s. One stipulation was that to keep the course safe any rider would be pulled if he fell more than one minute behind the leader. Thought to myself this would be a short and expensive day if my legs weren't any better than yesterday. Race started out at a reasonable pace and I was able to hang on the back for the majority of the event. Some laps I could sit comfortably in the peloton in the climbs and others I would lose a couple of seconds at the top and have to catch up on the downhill. Had a good time even if the course was a little hairy. In one section of the climb the pavement was completely gone and the center of the road was unridable so the peloton had to split and travel up the edges of the road. Some of the taller riders were hitting tree branches by going up the left side but I was short enough to ride under them if I stayed in the drops. Things got bad for me on the eighth lap as a rider had a blow out in the climb and must have swerved as several riders went down next to me like dominoes. I navigated around the carnage but got dropped as the riders in front of the crash started attacking. Last couple of laps was solo riding as I tried to stay within a minute so as not to be dropped. Ended up finishing and not getting pulled which was a small victory. Had a good time and rode to my limit. Didn't really meet any unpleasant racers and everyone seemed to have a good time even the guys that crashed. Need to lose a few pounds to be able to compete. Drove home and spun Johnson Hollow as my legs were felling good and it was a beautiful day.
