 Hamburg Road Race
Just about everything went wrong today and ended up really suffering on the bike. Had driven to Buffalo last night and the rain was supposed to end sometime during the night but didn't. Chinese food I bought for my evening meal was atrocious and threw most of it away. Slept fitfully and almost missed check in time for the race. GPS told me it was only a half hour from the motel to the start but by hitting almost every light in Buffalo red it took over an hour to get to the location. I think I made registration by less than a minute. Threw on my kit and pedaled to the starting line and had to wait for twenty minutes in a steady cold rain. Thought about bagging it as really didn't want to ride much less race. Teeth stopped chattering once the race started. I think there was around a dozen riders in my group. Race was three fourteen mile laps with around seven hundred feet of climbing per lap. Only made it a little over four miles before I got dropped on a small climb. Felt okay up to the point of getting dropped but at the first speed change I was done. Chased for awhile but saw I wasn't gaining anything so waited a bit for a guy I knew, Brian, to catch up. We climbed together to the top and waited a bit for a third rider to catch up. We chased at high speed on the downhill but failed to catch up to anyone form our race though we did catch up and pass a small group of Cat Vs from an earlier race. Our small group broke up the next time through the climbs with me lagging behind- never falling more than fifty seconds behind nor closing to more than twenty seconds. Rode loosely with the Cat Vs but being from different races we were not allowed to cooperate but used them to pace myself. That ended though at the end of the second lap when they finished their two laps. I should have given up and went home then but figured I would do the third lap as I couldn't get any wetter and wasn't cold-just miserable. Lost quite a good bit of time on the third climb and lost all my urge to ride once I caught Brian who had flatted after the top of the climb. Just spun it out after that and got passed by a Cat I form an earlier race who was doing four laps. Couldn't believe how fast he was going that late in his race. He went on to finish two minutes up on the rest of his race and I rolled in to finish next to last in mine. I did beat a couple of guys who had the sense to bail and Brian who flatted. Turned out to be a really bad day and a really poor ride.
