Took yesterday off to rest the legs and intended to do some hard climbing today with hope of improving this year's dismay climbing. Got out fairly early with expectations of avoiding the winds on the return leg of the ride. First thirty miles had two decent climbs and the next thirty was long shallow grades and course finishes with a seven mile decent. First climb up Mud Lake Rd from Watkins to Tyrone went well today as stood up over the early steep village section then had a good strong effort the rest long climb with the latter section never over ten percent and probably averaging six or seven. Hit fifty-five on the descent down Sebring Hill and really appreciated the bike as it was rock solid on the downhill. Can still remember having some scary shimmy on the hill on some of the previous bikes I've ridden. Had a good section to Bradford with tailwinds and great lake views. Tried to hit the climb on Telegraph Road in the big chainring with hope of hammering over the top, but it was not to be as started to crack on the eleven percent section and had to back off the tempo a bit. Still think I did better than last year as though I still had an escort of horseflies none of them attempted to land this year. Didn't really recover very well and on the downhill section and failed to hammer the big gear on the decline between Bath and Cooper Plains but still enjoyed the ride along the river. Was a little concerned about the long grade to Monterey as it can be a bit challenging in the latter portions of a long ride with a headwind but maintained the pace without any significant pain. They are tearing up the road west of Monterey for resurfacing but found that the scraped surface is much easier riding than the old one with its deep and numerous potholes. Was a little disappointed that the construction didn't carry over past Monterey but perhaps it will come latter. Cruised the downhill section and finished several minutes less than last year's time.
Had an idea to try to do a short hard ride with tired legs. Selected Johnson Hollow for the task with a goal of twenty miles an hour average. Didn't do anything special on the grade to Millport but still had good speed though average speed was about a half below what I would realistically need. Hoped to make it up on the climbing section as had a light tailwind to aid me on the climb. Was a little weak on the first section and had to sit and spin rather than stand but worked out okay as had terrific speed on the lesser following grades. Average continued to tick up in the right direction as I crested the rise and started the second half of the ride. Kept good focus and hammered the big gear with speeds in the low thirties out to 414. Made a little of the time I needed up but would need a good downhill and a terrific final two flat miles to get up to my desired twenty average. Started flagging a bit on the 414 climb but still kept the average climbing. Unfortunately things started to go south when I caught a red light at the top of the hill. Started back up and got the speed to 19.6 at the bottom of Corning hill but really needed to be at 19.8 to have a realistic shot. Tried to hammer the last two miles but could not generate any speed and bonked over the last mile. Did some leg pain and maintained the 19.6 and had to be satisfied with it. Things really got bad after I stopped and got my mail. Legs were almost completely dead when I got back on the bike and could barely do eight miles an hour over the last mile home. Thought about stopping at a playground and resting in a swing but kept on riding and hoped I wouldn't have to get off and push. Eventually got home and had to spent several minutes sitting in the front yard before building enough steam up to scale the front steps. Really put a hurt on the legs and body today.
