 Rock Stream Loop
Body is still feeling pretty run down with an incessant ear ache and a scratchy throat. Took a couple of days off to hopefully let my body deal with the infection but just had to get back on the road today with the great weather. Wanted to time trial my mild climbing route and see if I could beat my nineteen record. Wind was borderline today but would really only have to fight it for five or six miles on the stretch of 14 north of Watkins to Rock Stream. Course is pretty much twenty miles of near constant though shallow climbing then a similarly contoured descent. Started off with a good climb out of Watkins up 14 and pushed hard into the headwind over the top. Time check at the turn to Rock Stream had me well below a record pace but with ten miles of climbing to go it was too early to give up. Climb to Reading Center went well aided by the tailwind but not good enough to shave off any time and so still was running a deficit as I started the climb to the top of Sugar Hill. Finished off the climbing in fairly good shape and started the downhill and hammer sections of the ride. Didn't seem to make up much time down into Townsend but then had a good climb on the way out. So was happy that the climbing was going well but a little disappointed that the hammer seems to have left my legs. Still kept good speed down into Beaver Dams and the average continued to climb until I started down Johnson Hollow where I couldn't seem to get the average speed to move up despite an honest effort. Average started to climb on the way back down SR 14 from Millport to Montour and ended up with an eighteen average which was an okay speed but would have liked to have done better seeing as it is July and conditions are seldom as nice as they were today. Still a fun ride on one of my favorite local routes.
