Planned on climbing to the highpoint of Schuyler County today but was going to take the roundabout way and avoid all the steepish climbs via Rockstream. Waited for most of the day for the rain to pass. Watched the radar and when a light patch passed over made an attempt to escape the house. Got out the front door and the heavens opened up and started dumping rain. Stowed the bike in the garage and headed back to the comfort of the couch. Couple hours later the radar showed the clouds breaking just to the north then passing completely in a couple of hours. Made another attempt at riding and this time only made it as far as the front step. My cleat didn't provide sufficient friction on the wet wooden step and down I went. Landed first on my tailbone then my back struck one of the edges of a step and finally put a stop to my forward and downward progress by reaching out with my right arm and snapping my wrist backwards. Looking quickly around to make sure there were no witnesses to my acrobatics I crawled back up the stairs and into the house. Pain finally passed and when my vision cleared I checked out my wrist and found it to still be in working order. Figured that would be a little stiff in the morning and headed back out to try riding the bike again. Only hit some light rain and once passing through the heavy traffic in Watkins had dry road and tailwind on the first climb. Had a really good climb then pushed up the speed across the false flats to the turn at Rockstream. Once the turn was made had to climb into a headwind but this climb went very well also. Third climb was out of Reading Center up Church Street and it two went very well. Was spinning a big gear on a climb into the wind and making really good time. Figured the newfound power production must be a result of adrenalin and any natural pain killers that my body had produced during and after my fall. Rode the wave as best I could and hammered the last climb up Sugar Hill Road. Got to the top of the twenty miles of climb with an average speed of near seventeen. Thought I could probably pick it up much higher with twenty five miles of downhill ahead. Kept the speed up well and only slowwed a little of the short climb out of Townsend. Pushed the big gear for the rest of the ride and finally finished with the headwinds at Beaver Dams and only had downhill and tailwinds to contend with. Downhill down Johnson Hollow is now very fast with the new coat of satin asphault. Kept the pace up ther rest of the way and even came out of the saddle to sprint a small hill and to the finish. Had my strongest ride of the year after the fall but don't think I would recommend falling for a training routine.
