I did have surgery today, to repair the retina in my right eye. We (Jacque & I) had to be at the Same Day Surgery center of St Luke’s hospital by 6:00 AM. After all the initial check-in stuff, and pre-surgery work-up (and a little bit of a nap) I was taken to the holding room, around 9:00 AM, where I waited about another 20-30 minutes before the anesthesiologist came in to start the IV, which would then allow him to administer the sleeping agent, etc. He told me his was putting in the sleeping stuff, and what else he was going to be doing, and how I might feel, etc., then next thing I knew I was waking up in the recovery and it was after 2:00 PM.
The planned procedure was to remove the eye fluid (vitreous) and replace it with a gas. This gas would help force the retina to re-connect with the inner wall of the eye ball. Plus, using a laser, seal the tear of the retina so fluid would no long seep behind it. The doctor said that he might have to do a second procedure while he was in there, called Scleral Buckle. This involves placing a flexible band (like a rubber band) around the eye to counteract the force pulling the retina out of place. When Dr Rothman talked to my wife after finishing my surgery, he told her that he couldn’t find the tear, so he did do scleral buckle as a precaution.
I will be off my bike for a week or two – I’m not allowed to drive for at least a week and my physical exertion has been limited to an 8 lbs limit (a gallon of milk). Its going to be a long couple weeks of recovery.
