Felt better when I got up and decided on a fast ride in the morning to loosen up and pre-tension the legs with some speed the afternoon ITT. Wasn't sure how the back would hold up when I started the climb up New Odessa but didn't have any issues and pushed the climb varying in and out of the saddle and got my best time of the year with a 7:47. Was helped by the tailwind up the climb but was still encouraged. Kept a good spin going to the Junction and beat the timecheck by my more than a minute. Having a decent climb makes everything else a little easier and much, much faster. Had another good big chainring climb up SR13 to Sullinville and got on it pretty hard and made good speed to Sullinvinville. Had visions of a 20 mph average for the ride if I keep the pace going into the headwind on the way back. Had a bit of bad luck when a bee flew in my jersey and stung me in the back. Was able to reach around and dispatch the offender and was lucky to have enough flexibility to reach around and remove the poison sack and stinger. Also lucked out that it was a bee rather than a ground wasp and so could only sting me once. Thought it wouldn't be bad as there was quite a bit of back muscle to dilute the poison. Was mistaken though as had an intence burn going for a few miles. Reached Hanover Square with an eighteen five average and planned on making an effort on back nine. The effort failed when I hit the repaving of SR14 and had to wait in traffic for ten minutes before passing through the construction zone. When I restarted after the break I no longer felt as aggressive and ended up spinning home having decided to save the energy for the timetrial later in the day. Wind coming back was also most unfriendly and found the Curse to be in full effect again today with the north wind blowing.
Afternoon still had the north wind blowing hard. Temperature was comfortable. The sun was gone and clouds were blowing in and rain was promised for later in the evening. Made a few adjustments to my timetrial bars to stretch out a little more and present a more aggressive profile. Plan for today was to go all out on the way up the grade with the hard tailwind then tuck and spin after the turnaround and try to preserve whatever time I could garner on the first half. Minute man today didn't bring his TT bike as he had busted his bars four miles into a fifty six mile timetrial on Sunday. Calculated he was going to spot me forty seconds over the ten miles by using his conventional bike. Hit it hard out of the blocks and covered the first mile ten seconds faster than normal. Second mile also was very fast and was encouraged by catching sighe of my minute man as I passed over the two mile mark. Kept the tempo high and felt stong and caught another rider at the four mile mark and only trailed my minute man by twenty seconds. Hammered to the turnaround and almost caught him and we both made the really good turnarounds at about the same time. Had a 24.9 mile average after the turnaround and thought things looked great for the breaking twenty-five mph barrier but still had five miles of brisk headwind and the Curse to contend with. Thought I might pace off my minute man on the way back as he usually makes up at least five seconds a mile on me on the backside. He didn't seem to be able to hold the speed this week without his fast mount and I passed him over the small climb at mile six. Kept as aero as possible and spun a high cadence in the wind and had the average up 25.6 mph around RBI curve but started losing speed in the Curse. Speed dropped down to around 22 mph over the brigde but was able to get a good final surge in on the final grade and finished with a 23:32 @ 25.5 mph. Didn't think I would have had a good time today being as windy as it was but surprised myself with the fastest time of the year.
