Headed out for a longer ride today with some early climbing then forty odd miles of gradual downgrade. Though I might be able to up my game today and pull a seventeen mile average as two thirds of the ride would be in good tailwind or at least crosswind. Started up Steuben St by the hospital for the steepest climb I've done in quite awhile. Unfortunately didn't have the legs I needed and only crested at a little over eight when I really needed to be over ten for a decent ride. Pretty sure I wasn't going to be claiming a seventeen today even though I'd only got a couple of miles in. Had to keep heading up SR 414S for another seven miles of uphill before reaching the highpoint of the ride. I had to push a good headwind all the way to Corning. Had some good sections but not consistent. Almost but put in ditch by a delivery truck that I am assuming misjudged by speed and made a right turn in front of me into a driveway after pulling alongside me. Had to do some hard braking to avoid a collision. Other than that the trip to Corning was pleasant with some rolling terrain and an eight to ten foot shoulder. Pulled into Corning at a little over fourteen average. Had to work my way through the city before heading out to River Road. It is a nice rolling road going downhill along the Chemung River. Used to see quite a few riders on this road and wasn't totally disappointed as saw two coming at me. Had the only other climb of the day outside of Big Flats approaching the Drive-in. Recent wind storm converted the place from a two screen to a one screen. Sad to see. Got the average up to fifteen by Elmira and then started to lose it as I made my way through the city. Did enough work going down the valley to home with a strong tailwind to get the average up to sixteen. Was beaten today by a tough climb, stiff headwind and numerous traffic lights. Not a bad ride though overall as at least it wasn't as hot as it has been recently.
