Initially did the Run to the Lake back in the late seventies with two of my brothers on ten speeds back in the day when English racers actually had ten speeds. we would start before sunrise on the summer solstice and ride north on SR 14 to Sodus Point on the shores of Lake Ontario. It was nearly seventy miles up and the round trip would take us almost the entire day. The uniform of the days was T-shirt, cut-off jeans and sneakers. Walking hills and saddle sores were quite common occurrences. It eventually evolved to The Run to the Lake that was a team time trial to the lake and limp home as best you can on the return trip. It probably reached its peak in 1992 when we made the round trip in under six hours, although we did stop the clock for resupply at the gas station at Sodus Point. This year it was a solo effort and was more of a brisk walk rather than a run to the lake. Added an extra water bottle mount to my seat post and headed out an hour after sunrise to catch a slight tailwind on my way up the western edge of Seneca Lake. Pretty much just kept a steady pace up and didn't try any heroics. Average was decent though at least to the northern end of Seneca at Geneva at just a little below nineteen. Lost the tailwind by Geneva but wind remained light through Sodus before finally shifting to the north, that according to plan, would provide me with a tailwind on the return trip. Saw no other bicyclists today other than a couple of locals at the point touring around town. Was thrilled by new pavement between Lyons and Sodus that made the trip more pleasant than the normal rough road. The route becomes rolling after Lyons though it is fairly flat between there and Geneva. The last five miles into the Point is gradual downhill and that and the smell of the lake always produce a boost for the final push. Stopped at the same gas station for resupply as always but now went to a State Park with a sand beach to take a break. I'd pulled into town at eighteen and a half but lost some off the average touring about town and down to the beach for lunch. I was hoping for a tailwind on the way back, but it was mostly a following crosswind that wasn't ideal but still very welcome. The return trip was a little harder than the way up as usual, but really didn't get to the point of suffering. I just kept cranking out a steady pace and spun the few climbs. I remember on one of the more stressful rides, sitting alongside the road probably in the early stages of heat exhaustion wondering if I threw away my socks it would help me finish off the ride. Pretty much spent eight hours on the bike and finished in fair condition. Not a very memorable ride other than the memories I had as I rode throughout the day. New bike is a joy to ride.
