Decided to try to get a seventeen average on the Swartwood course. It would require two decent climbs and another ninety minutes of fast downgrade. It looked possible with a good tailwind predicted for the last twelve miles down the valley. All I would need to do is apply my recently developed climbing skills. Started out on the first climb up Old Odessa and first third of the steep section was going well until I hit the village line. It appeared that the road was oil and stoned yesterday. The advantage of going up a low traffic volume road worked against me today as there wasn't even a smooth trough tamped down from car traffic to ride in. Ended up doing a mile and a half of climbing on loose sharp stones. Result was a bit slower climb than recently with a nine and a quarter. Not disastrous but also not a good start. Had good speed to the junction with little hindrance from the wind. Was able to maintain a good pace through the rollers to the foot of Swartwood and arrived a mile an hour faster than my last attempt. Things were looking up. First mile of the climb with shallow grades also went well. Slowed down quite a bit on the last mile especially on the eight percent sections. Got over the top faster than my last attempt and started the twenty five miles of descent. Again had good speed until I rolled into Erin and found the main road closed do to a missing bridge. Had to decide to backtrack and try a side road through Erin that hopefully had its own bridge or follow the detour. Decided on following the detour on an unfamiliar road and my focus unfortunately shifted from speed to exploration. Had to make a short climb out of town before descending on a road parallel to the closed road. Made fairly good time except for the climb. After that is was big chainring mashing through Breezeport and into Horseheads. Legs didn't quite have what I needed and while still decent did that section slower than last time most probably due to a pesky headwind. Rolled into Horseheads and didn't think I had enough to make the seventeen but pushed hard down the valley and rolled into town with a sixteen eight. I almost always lose at least a tenth on the upgrade through town to my house and today was no exception. I was denied my seventeen today but had some decent excuses and it won't be long if I'm putting out seventeens routinely if I can stay healthy.
