Started out fairly slow today and had planned on a short moderate ride through Johnson Hollow but had a wicked north wind blowing and pedaling up the incline seemed easy. So got the leg speed up and hit it pretty hard. Did really well until going into Millport proper where the grade went up a little and there is a little shelter from the wind and the speed dropped a bit. Made it to the ghost of the 7-11 store at the base of the climb with an over a nineteen average and figured that a twenty over all was in the bag with a decent climb. Hit the bottom of the hill hard but couldn't carry it around the bend and so intensity dropped a bit. Kept the cadence high and spun well and was determined to get up to the highway with an eighteen and pick up the rest on the downhill. Had a little trouble doing that with a headwind across the top and ended up a little short at seventeen nine. No problem until I got out onto the highway and hit an even bigger headwind. The speed started dropping rather than going up. Tried hard but couldn't beat the wind and resigned myself to another failure as was just holding the average instead of increasing it. Got to the light at the top of the hill and hammered the mile and a half descent into Watkins, but it was too late as the damage was done. Finished over nineteen again but still can't break the twenty barrier. Kind of sad as I can remember cruising the course at twenty-one back in the day.
