Got a lovely sinus infection from riding in the rain yesterday and almost took the day off as the sweet siren song of the deck chair was strong today. Headed off to stalk some more Bon Ton riders as today they were headed from Watkins to Hammondsport. My sinus headache helped me select the shorter and flater of the two routes again today. Didn't start out until eleven so I figured that most of the riders had at minimum a two hour start. Wind was really nasty today and some of the gusts out of the west were in the thirty mile an hour range. First twenty five miles was mainly up hill and into the headwind. Took it fairly easy and just churned out the miles. Started picking up riders as I descended into Penn Yan then hit the motherlode on 54 between Penn Yan and Hammondsport. Saw a variety of riders and bikes and was impressed with some of the overweight riders on store bought bikes. Some of the hills around Hammondsport are challenging for me with my conditioned body and carbon fiber mechnical wonder and I would imagine it would be painful for some with more relaxed life styles. These riders were chugging along and appeared to be enjoying themselves though occasionally they would debike to stretch. Route 54 was a sweet ride with some epic views of the lake and of Bluff Point. Stopped in Hammondsport and topped off the fluids and got some food then had to start the trek home. Had to do a two major climbs to get back to Watkins. It wasn't as bad as I thought it might be as I had eaten some chips flavored with cayenne pepper in an attempt to clear out my sinuses. Either that or the heavy tailwind on the climbs got me through the day and started to feel better after three hours of suffering on the bike. Last nine miles were fast downhill and the suffering of the day was displaced with the thrill of speed.
