 Round the Lake Scenic Style
Wanted to get some miles and burn some calories but plan on riding with a friend on the fourth and wanted to have live legs so rounded Seneca but spun on the side roads rather than pushing the big gear on the express route. Legs felt good again today and spun the first hill out of Watkins with a fast steady cadence. Spent several miles in Amish country and drafted both tractors and horse drawn buggies. Felt kind of sorry for the horses on a couple of the climbs as they really labored to pull the carts in the heat. Not sure whether horses like pulling wagons or not but I guess it is better than being raised for dog food. Really only had one steep climb up the west side of the lake getting out of the Keuka inlet. After that though it was easy riding to Geneva. Hit the trails in the lakeside parks in Geneva but didn't care much for them as some of the surfaces were pretty bad and there was quite a few pedestrians to navigate around. Trail dead ended in the state park and had to backtrack better than a mile to get back on the highway. Picked up a little wind on the east lake road but things went well until I bogged down a little on the trails through Samson Park. Vibrations from the poor surface taxed me a little. Had a good climb out of Willard and fair climb out of Lodi but hit the wall on the dirt section of climb before rejoining 414S. Bonked big time on the final mile. Ran out of water soon after but most of the ride once on the highway was downhill. Also got to observe the operation of a horse drawn manure spreader that was pretty neat. Struggled up the climb out of Valois and had to stop and resupply on Coke and Zingers at the store in Hector. After some fine bench sitting at the general store, I remounted the bike and did the final twelve miles of downhill at a slow pace. Felt better toward the end as Zingers obviously have tremendous restaorative properties. Overall a nice ride despite the bonking in the headwind and heat.
